SCHOOL UPDATE: COVID-19

March 23, 2020

March 18, 2020

Hello Ardenwood Community,

I hope this update finds you well and adjusting to our developing remote learning arrangement.  As a father of two elementary age boys myself, I am experiencing this change not only as a school principal but as a parent as well.  With these challenges I am thankful for having family near.  Your children are looking to you for guidance and calm, and we at Ardenwood hope to support you at home with the resources and the schedules we are providing.  As we complete Day 3 of our school closure, it is important to have in mind that additional and new ways to support you at home are in development.  It undoubtedly is an unfamiliar challenge to read and filter through communications from your child’s teacher, and for many of us to repeat that same process with your own employer.   It appears to be an excellent time to remind everyone that March’s Character Trait of the Month is “Problem Solving” and we all can work together to strengthen that skill.  As to not “overcrowd” the digital space with an avalanche of new ideas right at the beginning of our school closure, I kindly request that parents do not use the Reply All function to a teacher’s email to send out their own private invitations to families.  Doing so has the potential to confuse the community as to what is an official ask or program of the teacher versus an unofficial parent generated idea.  Parent mutual support is a very valuable commodity.  I do encourage virtual playdates and supervised conversations; however our initial focus at this time should be on establishing a clear understanding of what the official process and expectations are within each classroom.  Please continue communicating with your child’s teacher through email/phone.

For those families who participate in the school free/reduced price meal program, there are a number of options that I would like to make you aware of.  FUSS is a nonprofit organization formed in 2012 to support all schools in FUSD by partnering with community to raise funds through events and activities.  FUSS is currently partnering with three restaurant locations in north Fremont on the distribution of student lunch.  More information can be found by clicking here.  Also, starting March 23rd and going through April 7th, FUSD Child Nutrition Services will be offering the following meal program:

  • Who: Free and Reduced Meal Program Students
  • Time: 10:00 am to 11:00 am - Schools will be serving both breakfast and lunch at the same time to minimize personal interaction.  Breakfast will be a cold meal and lunch will be a hot meal.  The one hour time period is due to lunch being a hot meal.  Students may take both.
  • Where: Parking lots at Washington, Kennedy, and Irvington High Schools

Dear Ardenwood Families,

As you know, Fremont schools will cancel classes beginning March 16, 2020. On Monday, March 16, staff will be on campus and working from home continuing to plan lessons and create resources for students.  Starting in the afternoon of Monday, March 16, we will begin the process of performing a deep clean on our classrooms.  While our initial notice identified both Monday and Tuesday as days where the public would be able to pick up materials left in the classroom, I kindly request that you comply with the following amendment.

Ardenwood requests that visitors come to the school on Monday, March 16 between the hours of 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, only if there are ESSENTIAL items that they need to pick up.  We strongly urge students and/or parents to come ONLY if they need items from the school.  Students and/or parents will simply exit the campus when finished. It is important to keep this process moving quickly so that we can limit contact and exposure for prolonged period of time.  Your assistance in this matter will assist maintaining the sanitizing of our classrooms once that process starts in the afternoon.

Many staff members are making use of existing online resources and communications systems that your child is familiar with (i.e., Google Classrooms, Benchmark Universe, Clever).  If you do not have a computer in your house, please email Assistant Principal Sutton at lsutton@fusdk12.net to arrange for a school Chromebook to be checked out and picked up.  Families will be asked to fill out a form to check out Chromebooks and will be expected to return them in good condition when school resumes.  Chromebooks are not available to families who just want an "extra" computer in the house.  If you do not have internet access at your residence, please visit this Comcast resource:

Comcast Announces Comprehensive COVID-19 Response to Help Keep Americans Connected to the Internet https://corporate.comcast.com/covid-19

The Fremont Unified School District, in coordination with the City of Fremont, is working on a plan to continue breakfast and lunch distribution to families who previously were receiving school meals through the free/reduced price program.  Please look to the district website for updates from Child Nutrition Services as that information is publicized.

As new information is available, we will send information via Twitter, our school's website, and through BrightArrow messaging.  During this time we ask that you listen to these messages in their entirety so that you can receive all information.

This is uncharted territory for all of us.  I want to assure you that our administration, teachers, and support staff are doing our very best to provide as much preparation and support as possible for our students and families.  Due to the quick escalation of events, it is highly possible that we have overlooked some details or could not see some of the roadblocks that are sure to come.  I do believe that this staff has done all we can to create systems which are least disruptive and most supportive for our students.  Thank you for your patience and support while we navigate this challenge together as Dragons.

March 13, 2020 (PM update)

Dear Ardenwood Families,

I would like to take a moment to publicly thank our school's staff for their professionalism and response this week in a landscape that was continually changing.  During our school's closure, the education of your child will continue.  I trust that you share my belief that nothing can replace the impact that direct teacher-to-student instruction has.  However, our school will continue to work to provide appropriate remote learning resources and assignments for you and your child.  It will not be appropriate however for you to expect individualized learning plans for all of our nearly 1,000 students.

Staff will be working diligently at the start of next week to enhance what has already been sent home this weekend.  Should you need or elect to come to campus on Monday to pick up any remaining personal items or essential study materials from the classroom, please check into the office first (9:00 am to 3:00 pm).  The school requests that you do so in a quick manner, without the need of a large family group.  This will assist us all in supporting social distancing in response to COVID-19.  Neither Monday or Tuesday will be time for you to have extended conversations with staff, as they will be working to support the needs of all of our students.  Specific questions regarding school work can be emailed directly to your child's teacher.  Again, please be patient and understanding while awaiting their response.

What makes Ardenwood shine is its wonderful students.  Please let them know that we here at Ardenwood continue to expect them to Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible while at home.

Respectfully,

March 13, 2020

Dear Ardenwood Families,

I encourage you to periodically visit the district's website as that will be the location of the most up to date district-wide notices.  Please read below for information that impacts Ardenwood Elementary School.  Ardenwood has cancelled/postponed all school-wide assemblies and large gatherings for 30 days as of 3/12/20.  This means the following events in the direct future have either been cancelled or postponed:

  • Cultural Days Assembly & Cultural Days Auditions
  • Fremont Education Foundation Family Coding & Makers Night
  • Field Trips
  • Fremont Symphony Young Composers Concert
  • Open House
  • Spring Musical

One of Ardenwood's greatest assets is our parent/guardian volunteers.  However, in an abundance of caution, Ardenwood will be reducing the number of parent volunteers on campus.  Classroom teachers will still continue communicate with their classroom families about volunteer needs.  Generally it can be expected that volunteers for clerical tasks may continue.  Volunteers for in-class direct student tutoring and assistance will temporarily be halted.  Any adult volunteer will still need to be screened through the main office.

For those students with families that have already elected to keep their children at home, Ardenwood wishes to partner with you to ensure that you have access to learning materials that will be distributed online.  Should you currently be experiencing any equity issue (ex. no computer available at home), please communicate that to your classroom teacher.

Respectfully,

Elie Wasser

March 12, 2020

Dear Ardenwood Families,

If you have not already had an opportunity to read the updated notice from FUSD Superintendent Wallace, please click here.  Ardenwood will continue to support our students as the district's response to the coronavirus evolves in response to guidance from local and regional authorities.  While we respect an individual family's decisions, if you currently elect to keep your child at home, please understand that the process for your child's teacher to compile home assignments is not immediate.  I kindly ask that you provide time for our wonderful teaching staff to coordinate.  Please continue to look for updates on the district's website.

The school is also aware that updates and guidance from the federal, state, county, and district level do not always get published at the same time.  This can cause confusion, or the incorrect perception that school response is not aligned as it relates to items like assemblies, field trips, etc.  I want to assure you that Ardenwood Elementary continues to be in excellent contact with all levels of authority and will publish and update information as that language is formalized.

We request that parents/guardians communicate school absences to the main office at Ardenwood at (510) 794-0392.  Absences at this time will be excused.  Please clearly and slowly state the name of your child, their room number or teacher, and the number of days you will be keeping your child at home.  Thank you if you have also shared that information with your child's teacher, but it also important for this information to be communicated to the main office.  If a child does not attend the regular school day, they may not come to school to take part in any after school club or program on the same day of the absence.

Respectfully,

Elie Wasser
